Menu Items

The "menu item" component of the IMMEX packaging tool allows you to input all menu items that you wish to track while students are problem solving. The order in which you input menu items into the packaging tool will be important for IMMEX analysis. Therefore, prior to inputting menu items into the packaging tool, construct a template similar to the sample trackable menu item illustrated in this module. Note that trackable menu items are placed in the actual order in which information will be entered into dialog box one. Generally, you begin with the prolog, end with the epilog, and items between the prolog and the epilog are sequenced as you would like subgroups to appear in the search-path map template of your problem set. In the embeded example, 54 menu items are being tracked, therefore, menu item number one is the prolog and menu item 54 is the epilog. Also note that since dictionary has no submenu items, it is tracked because when students click on the hyperlink for dictionary, they get to view its contents, unlike the other primary menu items where a click reveals sub menu items.

In order to ensure that you include each item you want tracked, use your case links file as a source for your input. Note that primary menu items with submenu items are not actually tracked because when a learner clicks on a primary menu item, sub menu items appear, rather than menu item content. Since a click on a primary menu items with submenu items does not yield "information," primary menu items with complementary menu items are not tracked and should not be included in your list.
